Position Summary
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications in all areas related to the field of civil and environmental engineering for an open rank tenure-system faculty position. Candidates must have a doctorate in civil or environmental engineering or a closely-related engineering discipline at the time of appointment, which is anticipated as August 16, 2023.
The candidate will be expected to develop a nationally-recognized research program and teach courses within the Department at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. All areas of research specialization will be considered, but preference will be given to those that are complimentary to existing strengths of the Department, which include: resilient materials and infrastructure; transportation systems and safety; geotechnical materials and engineering, water resource systems; smart buildings, energy systems, and sustainability; air and water quality engineering; and environmental health.
Tenure-system faculty within the Department are expected to establish a vibrant, sustainable, and internationally visible research program; make significant scholarly contributions to their discipline; be an effective teacher and mentor of both undergraduate and graduate students; and engage in institutional and professional service as well as public outreach. The Department and College have a strong track record of mentoring junior faculty to successfully grow their academic careers.

Required Degree
Doctorate -Civil or Environmental Engineering or closely related field
Minimum Requirements
- Applicants must have a PhD degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a closely related field at the time of appointment
- Applicants from all areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering with experience are encouraged to apply
- Applicants must have strong oral and written communication skills
- Applicants are expected to work well in a team setting and be highly self-motivated
- The successful candidate should provide evidence of commitment to working with cross-disciplinary research teams and dedication to mentoring diverse students preparing for careers in research, policy, and/or practice
Desired Qualifications
- Background that is complimentary to one or more existing strengths of the Department, which include: resilient materials and infrastructure; transportation systems and safety; geotechnical materials and engineering; water resource systems; smart buildings, energy systems, and sustainability; air and water quality engineering; and environmental health
- The candidate will have a record of research funding or demonstrate potential to secure research funding from private, state, and national agencies
- The candidate will have evidence of peer reviewed publications and ability to establish community partnerships
- The candidate will demonstrate ability for scholarly activities, including peer-reviewed journal articles. In addition to sustaining an active program of scholarship, this faculty will be responsible for teaching and mentoring graduate/undergraduate students and participating in department, college, and university governance activities

The MSU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has strong interdisciplinary research at the frontiers of knowledge, and first-class educational programs on a foundation of core civil and environmental engineering disciplines. The Department has 28 tenure-system faculty members with strong research programs across all major areas of civil and environmental engineering, and annual research expenditures of about $7M. The Department has accredited B.S. degree programs in both Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering.
